Maha Shivaratri or Shivaratri literally means “Great Night of Lord Shiva.” It is celebrated every year on the 13th night or 14th day of the Krishna Paksha (waning moon) of the Hindu month ‘Maagha’ (February – March). In the year 2010, Maha Shivaratri falls on 12th February.

Importance of Shivaratri: The day of Shivaratri is observed in honor of Lord Shiva to attract his mercy for spiritual advancement. Vedic scriptures describe this day as very important to please Lord Shiva and attain his good pleasure.
Some say that Lord Shiva was married to Goddess Paarvati on the day of Maha Shivaratri, while some say that it was this day when Lord Shiva performed the ‘Tandava’ or the dance of destruction of all universes fordissolution.
Maha Shivaratri is celebrated by observing all day fasting and an all night long vigil. Lord Shiva is worshiped in great fervor by offering elaborate abhishekam to Shiva Lingas. Ganga and Bael leaves are offered to Shiva Linga. On this day people hear the pastimes of Lord Shiva and Paarvati and spend the night by chanting the panchakshari mantra: Om Namaha Shivaya.
